Meet Brooke Garlick – a Business Support Administrator. We asked Brooke about her experiences as a working mum and what advice she would give to other mums looking for flexible work.
Tell us about yourself…
I am a Mum of a 5 year old who started school this year. I work part time in an admin role for a great little company close to home with great flexibility around being a working Mum and all that that entails.
What made you apply for your current role?
I have worked the last 20 years in a full time corporate job as an Area Manager and Executive Assistant which I loved but my priorities changed and my son was 6 months away from starting school. So I decided to stop work and spend a few quality months with him. Then after he started school it was time to find a part time job that allowed me to work school hours close to home.
The role I currently work in was exactly what I was looking for, it suited the family flexible work life and it was also a responsibility step down which I was really happy with.
How did you find the job search process?
Updating my resume was the challenging part but thankfully I had some great support in shaping up my resume.
I found the job search process really difficult as there are not many jobs out there that fit the – part time school hours and local to my home, criteria. I applied for a lot of jobs that were full time locally due to the lack of part time jobs and this left me feeling quite discouraged.
A friend of mine recommended I look at JustMums Recruitment as she had some luck with them. So I had a look at their website, the perfect job came up and I applied for it. I heard back within a hour and a half of applying and had an interview booked in. I was so surprised as normally you don’t hear anything back. The interview was a real pleasure and the ladies at JustMums Recruitment were fantastic to deal with. I had an interview with the company fairly quickly and within two weeks of applying I had an exciting new job.
What advice can you give to other Mums looking for flexible work?
My recommendation would be to look at JustMums Recruitment as they hire specifically Mums looking for work and have employers looking for working Mums that often have great working conditions. I cannot recommend them highly enough around their service and support.
