Meet Beverly Murrells-Palombi – an Office Assistant who loves to travel and spend time with her family. We asked Beverly about her experiences as a working mum and how she found the job search process when looking for flexible work.
Tell us about yourself…
Hi my name is Bev, I live in Yarraville with my husband and two teenage boys…. yes, a house full of men even the dog is a male. Our weekends are like many others driving the boys to their various sporting and social events. When I’m not designated Uber driver I enjoy catching up with friends for a latte, dinner or a movie… or all three. We love to travel as a family, our best trip was our first ever cruise to Vanuatu and its surrounding islands. We soon discovered that we don’t all have great sea legs. However, I have to say the islands were amazing, water so clear and sand that is ridiculously soft under your feet. My career up until recently has always been in the finance sector working as a PA. I have been incredibly fortunate to have had support from my various managers in all my roles especially when the boys were little. Any working Mum knows the feeling when you’re snowed under at work and the phone rings and it’s the care centre or the school and you need to leave to pick them up. Anyone that works part time knows that you give 110% because you appreciate the flexibility. With the help of JustMums Recruitment I am now working in a fabulous role with a great group of people at Think Business Events. Working three days a week in Port Melbourne…ticks all the boxes for me.
What made you apply for your current role?
That’s an interesting story. I hadn’t been happy in my previous role for a while and a friend I worked with previously tagged me in a Facebook post for another role advertised by JustMums Recruitment. I didn’t get that position thankfully but when this role came up the ladies suggested I put my name forward.
“The minute I walked into the interview I felt comfortable. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate working in an environment that is supportive and inclusive”.
How did you find the job search process?
I’m sure everyone can appreciate that making that first initial step is daunting but JustMums Recruitment guided me all the way. They offered feedback on my resume, constructive tips on what not to do & what to do. It didn’t matter how often or when I sent an email or text the response was immediate. When the time came for the actual interview they were hands on and available, which when your nerves are letting you down is reassuring. I recall a few phone calls where we would end up chatting about something completely different and unrelated because they make you feel so at ease. Well done ladies.
What advice can you give to other Mums looking for flexible work?
Firstly, don’t underestimate yourself, sometimes when you haven’t worked outside the home for a while or you’ve been in a role that you’re not completely happy with your confidence can take a tumble. You need a team that firstly understands how you’re feeling and that can genuinely guide you to achieving your goal – a new job!
“Most importantly back yourself. I think for working mums whether it’s full time or part time you’re looking for it makes sense to go with a like-minded team”.
